Catherine Ford is a British actress who was born in Bloomsbury. After her father's departure from the household, the actress was raised up by her mother, godparents and grandmother. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her show in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
